An education experience on the practice of medicine back during the revolutionary times. The staff was great and really get into their roles.
One of my favorite spots in downtown Fred. I stop by the garden outback everytime I'm down. Beautiful, historic little building. Street parking out front not available
This was a great little museum, and they had enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. Stayed behind after the tour and chatted for a while, it was definitely worth it! Anyone interested in how medicine used to be done, and seeing the methods that eventually evolved or disappeared to make way for modern medicine should check this place out.
Dr. Mercer left his practice to join the Revolutionary army and died as a Brigadier General at the Battle of Princeton. An honorable man, no doubt.
Lot's of history about early medicine in the US. Friendly staff and they stayed in character the whole time. One of my favorite stops.
HUGH MERCER APOTHECARY, estab. ca.1760 - Having fled Scotland, Dr. Mercer, a physician and pharmacologist, met Colonel George Washington in Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. At the recommendation of Washington, he later opened a medical practice and "pharmacy" (they don't call themselves "Doctors of Medicine" for nothing!) in Fredericksburg.
