Renting a car is something that I always dread. There are so many loopholes and so many possibilities to get scammed. This Hertz location was fantastic, however.
Rented a car at this location for an out of town trip. The location was small and unkept. They gave me a dirty car because they said they didn't have time to wash it. That should have been the point where I walked away, but I had no other options and needed this car for my trip. I returned the car a week later on the day it was due. No one was working, so I dropped the keys in the box and parked the locked car outside the office as I was instructed to do. 4 days later I get a call from hertz saying my rental is "critically overdue" and they are taking action to get the car back at my expense. Now I have to sort this mess out and prove I returned their crappy Hyundai and hope for the best. I have a feeling this will cost me more money and time. I will NEVER rent from Hertz again. Good luck getting any help whatsoever from calling their headquarters. What a joke.
When I arrived, the person behind the counter asked for my preference between a Nissan Versa and a Ford Fiesta. I decided on the Versa. After checking the lot, however, we found that the Versa was not there. For the trouble, I was upgraded to a Toyota Corolla (the next tier) at no additional charge.
Returning the car was dead simple. We dropped it off, they checked gas and mileage, and I payed the quoted amount.
The car was great (it had only 12k miles on it) and exceeded our rental expectations. The only confusion we had was with the PlatePass system, which was not explained to us. We ended up not using it, however, since it is stated to charge a hefty amount per day for using PlatePass.
1. Hertz insurance, which I rejected, is more expensive than other third-party insurance options available.
Very accommodating, unlike typical airport counter
3. PlatePass is a horrible scam which charges some $6/day to use (in addition to the cost of the tolls) after using it once. That is, if you use PlatePass once, you will be charged some $6/day for every day after that. Solution: never open the PlatePass.
Prompt & friendly. We got stuck in fredvegas due to a breakdown of our car. The two guys here got us lined up with a rental in a few minutes and saved our day.
So, in total, there were 3 possible "scam" points:
2. There is an option to pay for a full tank of gas ahead-of-time. If you do this, the car can be returned with any amount of fuel in the tank. Unfortunately, they charge you for a full tank ahead of time. Thus, returning the car with anything more than a full tank is essentially lost-money (but it saves a trip to the gas station!)
I booked a car through AAA from this location. Because of my AAA membership, they waived both the under-25 fee and the additional driver fee from the rental.
I called first thing Saturday morning, 9am to set up a time to pick up a rental through my insurance. I had all pertinent info, including a confirmation code from my insurance. After calling three times, being told they couldn't find it, calling my insurance, being put on hold for over 20 minutes, the guy there finally calls me back to let me know that he finally found my reservation, which had been there all along, but he couldn't get me a car because they were closing.
EDIT: I've adjusted this rating to be 4-stars instead of 5. About 2 weeks after returning the car, I received a charge on my credit card in the amount of $30 for going through a toll gate. Although I paid the toll immediately (it was a NY pay-toll-online), I was still charged by Hertz.
